Primary Responsibilities

 The Coatings Scientist with Pigment Specialization:

  • Leads technical programs related to new pigment and effect flakes toolbox introduction.
  • Has a fundamental understanding of color science including color measurement systems and instrumentation.
  • Has extensive knowledge of pigments, pigment durability and in-use performance attributes including metamerism, application, circulation and storage characteristics.
  • Interacts with pigment vendors to assess value-in-use of new products in the marketplace.
  • Is responsible for pigment approvals and development and implementation of new color formulations in solventborne and waterborne coating systems.
  • Works as an active member of cross functional project teams with Global Technology, Manufacturing, Product Management, IT and Sales.
  • Applies statistical methods to investigate problems and analyze results.
  • The role of Coatings Scientist with Pigment Specialization would report to the Technology Manager, located in Mt. Clemens, Michigan and may require some travel (~10%)

  • Minimum B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related science degree
  • Minimum 10-15 years practical color experience.
  • Pigment chemistry understanding.
  • Product development experience in color and color measurements.
  • Demonstrated ability to get results.
  • Ability for effective written and oral communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply data analysis tools to system development and problem solving. Appropriate skills include theoretical or empirical modeling, statistics, computer systems development and process control. Must be able to interpret, analyze and apply numerical color and appearance measurement.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform efficient experiments to identify issues, develop relationships and validate results using process/product variables in relation to visual or optical measurement responses.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various functions and mentor other formulators.
