Primary Responsibilities

25% People and Talent Management

  • Plan staffing levels aligned with budget and business needs
  • Interview, select and hire scientists/engineers and technician talent
  • Lead performance management processes and utilize tools to engage and encourage employee contribution – i.e. goal setting, ongoing feedback and annual performance appraisals
  • Effectively manage employee performance through ongoing feedback and recognition, rewards and when necessary, the corrective action process
  • Engage employees in career development planning and support growth and development to support functional talent management aligned to individual contributor technical career paths and submit annual nominations for technical progression
  • Identification and development of a pipeline for future leadership career path talent
  • Foster positive employee relations that enable teamwork, cohesion, appreciation for diversity and team-oriented goals
  • Consciously reinforce a team culture that emphasizes Axalta values and behaviors and adopts business and functional guiding principles & vision
  • Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, training, vacation planning and overtime scheduling
  • Maintain transparent communication practices by communicating organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, email, IM, and regular interpersonal communication.
  • Create culture of empowerment for employees by delegating responsibilities & developmental opportunities, providing feedback, and holding them accountable to commitments

50% Team Execution

  • Schedule travel and customer support of application engineering team members.
  • Manage the overall operational activities of the team to meet the organization's expectations for productivity, quality, and goals
  • Assure effective project management that successfully delivers results on time. Plan and implement systems fulfill the mission and the goals of the department efficiently & effectively
  • Plan and allocate resources to effectively staff and accomplish departmental productivity and quality goals
  • Implement staffing plans consistent with anticipated workloads
  • Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, and defensible in accordance with organization policies and procedures
  • Provide oversight to ensure individual project accomplishments and overall work unit effectiveness is achieved relative to committed objectives
  • Provide leadership for staff development and hold staff accountable to meet individual and business objectives through key performance indicators.
  • Plan, evaluate, and improve the efficiency of business processes and procedures to enhance speed, quality, efficiency and output through Lean Principles and continuous improvement.
  • Effective management of application lab/facility operations including EHS
  • Work across internal organizational matrix and external customers and functions to communicate, facilitate, or leverage to achieve project objectives


25% Technical Execution


  • He / She will execute project activity and lead the team to execute project activity
  • Conduct customer line surveys and publish written report to customers and internal team
  • Conduct customer line trials, including pre-trial preparation and post-trial
  • Partner with R&D during new product development process and conduct validation testing in application lab prior to customer validation testing
  • Lead product and equipment validation testing at target customers
  • On-site application and product support during new customer commercialization
  • With equipment vendors and customers, design and validate new line configurations to deliver customer specified results
  • Provide advanced technical direction and assistance to customers on application of all applicable product lines
  • Work with complex customer lines on a project basis providing expert advice, assistance, and trouble shooting.
  • Support sales and sales management team during presentations requiring application equipment expertise
  • Provides operational and technical guidance and advice to improve quality, efficiency, and line design
  • Travel up to 75% to customer and vendor sites
  • Provide leadership in understanding emerging application equipment innovations

Minimum Requirements

  • Ø  High School Diploma required
  • Ø  BS or higher Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or related field is preferred.
  • Ø  Minimum of 5 years coatings application experience
  • Ø  Proficient in coating application knowledge and technique over a wide range of equipment and coating technology
  • Ø  Successful in line design with equipment vendors and customers
  • Ø  Should have a fundamental understanding of applicable coatings technologies
  • Ø  Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), problem solving capabilities and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team
  • Ø  Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% of the time with possible international travel
  • Ø  Ability to develop and present detailed presentations to all levels of internal and external customers.


Axalta Coating Systems is seeking a Manager for our Application Engineering team to join our Industrial Global Building Products Group in High Point, NC. This Application Engineer role will focus leadership of the team supporting all coating technologies and business units within the Building Products Group.  This role will support coating application needs of existing customers, support the sales team in the pursuit of new business and support Axalta R&D team during new product development.  The role of Application Engineer will report into the Technical Manager of the application engineering team.
