Primary Responsibilities

Axalta Coating Systems is seeking an experienced Dispersion Chemist and with a strong background in formulation, pigments, rheology, and colloid science to lead Dispersion R&D for high performance coatings in Axalta’s global Research and Development organization. The Dispersion Chemist will spend 70% of their time as an individual contributor and 30% of their time as Team Manager on team coordination and people leadership.  The Dispersion Chemist will contribute individually and collaborate with global sites and functions within the global technology organization to develop new or improved pigment dispersions for our OEM, refinish, and liquid industrial coating systems.  The Dispersion Chemist will work closely with global resources in marketing, manufacturing, color formula development and sourcing to identify business needs and help define the pigments and testing necessary required to support the business goals.  Ideal candidates would have experience with dispersion processing from lab to production scale. The Dispersion Chemist will regularly interact with a wide range of global leaders and experts; excellent organization and ability to communicate effectively across multiple functions, regions, and organization levels is required. The successful candidate will join Axalta’s Global Innovation Center (GIC) in Philadelphia, PA. The GIC group develops high performance coatings for the Transportation, Refinish, and General Industrial markets.


Technical Execution


  • Develops new or improved dispersions, including formulation, stability/durability testing, and pigment selection for automotive, performance and industrial coatings.
  • Applies statistically designed experiments and six sigma methods to conduct research and validate results.
  • Use of subject matter expertise to guide team members with problem solving. Remove barriers and address technical challenges in support of execution of projects and in the development of new products and processes.
  • Leverage and reach across organizational boundaries to draw SME knowledge in support of the team, as needed, to execute effectively.
  • Networks with global business, marketing, manufacturing, sourcing and technology personnel to maximize effectiveness of technical programs and implement results.
  • Networks with suppliers of critical color materials (such as pigments and dispersants).
  • Networks with external resources in academia, professional societies and customers to gather and apply information to technical and business objectives. 

Team Execution

  • Plan, organize and manage dispersion development projects and related R&D activities for targeted market segments, effectively using project management tools to deliver results.
  • Manage the overall operational activities of the team to meet the organization's expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishment.
  • Assure effective project management that successfully delivers results on time. Plan and implement systems that perform the work and fulfill the mission and the goals of the department efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide leadership for staff development and hold staff accountable to meet individual and business objectives through establishment and measure of key performance indicators.
  • Effective management of overall lab/facility operations including EHS&S.
  • Work across internal organizational matrix and external customers and functions to communicate, facilitate, or leverage to achieve project objectives.
  • Summarize and present findings to management, internal collaborators, and external customers.

People and Talent Management

  • Lead employees using performance management processes and tools to engage and encourage employee contribution including goal setting, ongoing feedback, and annual performance reviews.
  • Maintain transparent communication practices by appropriately communicating organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, email, IM, and regular interpersonal communication.
  • Effectively manage employee performance through ongoing feedback and recognition, rewards, and when necessary, disciplinary action with the support and approval of HR and management.
  • Consciously create a team culture consistent that emphasizes Axalta values and behaviors as well as business and functional guiding principles and vision.
  • Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, on the job training, vacation planning, and overtime scheduling.
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and hold employees accountable.


Minimum Requirements

  • MS or PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science required
  • A minimum of five (5) years industrial experience, pigments, pigment dispersions, dispersion process, color science, or formulation.
  • A minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in an industrial environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and contribute in a team environment.
  • Ability to serve as a knowledgeable resource to the organization's management team that provides leadership and direction.
  • Skilled at interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching and development skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence peers.
